Overview

PackBase is a gear tracking application for outdoor enthusiasts. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

The short version: We collect only what's needed to run the app. We don't sell your data. We don't use tracking or advertising cookies. Your gear lists are private by default.

Data We Collect

Account Information

• Email address (for login and account recovery)
• Display name (optional, shown on public contributions)
• Profile settings (anonymous mode, unit preferences)

Gear Data

• Gear items you add to your closet (name, brand, weight, category)
• Packs and pack lists you create
• Weight submissions to the community database
• Ratings and reviews you submit

Automatically Collected

• Basic server logs (timestamps, error logs) for troubleshooting
• No IP addresses are stored long-term
• No location data is collected

How We Use Your Data

• Provide the service: Store your gear, calculate weights, sync across devices
• Community features: Aggregate anonymous weight data for community averages (only if you contribute)
• Account management: Send password reset emails, important service updates
• Improve the app: Fix bugs, understand usage patterns (aggregated, not individual)

We do not sell your data, show you ads, or share your information with data brokers.

Cookies & Local Storage

We use minimal browser storage, all for functional purposes:

Essential Cookies

• Authentication: Session cookies to keep you logged in (provided by Supabase)

Local Storage (Browser)

• Theme preference (light/dark mode)
• Unit system preference (metric/imperial)
• Dismissed banner states (so we don't show them again)

We do not use analytics cookies, tracking pixels, advertising cookies, or any third-party tracking. No cookie consent banner is needed because we only use essential and functional storage.

Third-Party Services

We use a minimal set of services to run PackBase:

• Supabase: Database and authentication (privacy policy)
• Fly.io: Application hosting (privacy policy)
• Google Fonts: Font delivery (no cookies, HTTP requests only)
• Cloudflare: DNS and DDoS protection (privacy policy)

Data Sharing

What's Private

• Your gear closet (private by default)
• Your packs (private by default, shareable via link)
• Your email address (never shown publicly)

What Can Be Public

• Weight submissions (anonymous by default, optionally attributed)
• Ratings and reviews (shown with display name if set)
• Packs you explicitly share via public link

You control your visibility through the anonymous mode setting in your profile.

Your Rights

Under GDPR, CCPA, and similar privacy laws, you have the right to:

• Access: Request a copy of your data
• Correction: Update inaccurate information
• Deletion: Request deletion of your account and data
• Portability: Export your data in a standard format
• Objection: Opt out of certain data processing

Data Retention

• Account data: Kept while your account is active
• Gear data: Kept while your account is active
• Community contributions: May remain anonymized after account deletion to preserve community averages
• Server logs: Automatically deleted after 30 days

When you delete your account, your personal data is removed within 30 days. Anonymized aggregate data (like weight averages) may be retained.

Security

We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure authentication, and regular security updates. Your password is hashed and never stored in plain text. However, no system is 100% secure — please use a strong, unique password.

Children's Privacy

PackBase is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy occasionally. Significant changes will be announced via email or in-app notification. The "last updated" date at the top shows when changes were made.
